Local governments must comply with the Minnesota Data Practices Act. Towns, however, are generally exempt – only towns in the metropolitan area with urban powers must comply with the Data Practices Act.

The website of the Minnesota Department of Administration’s Information Policy Analysis Division (IPAD) has educational materials about the Act and the public’s access to local government information according to the Act. The materials can be accessed by going to the IPAD website at http://www.ipad.state.mn.us/. You can also contact IPAD at (651) 296-6733 or (800) 657-3721, or by mail at 201 Administration Building, 50 Sherburne Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55155.
